From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messerschmitt_Bf_109 Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-2/trop "Black 6", WkNr 10639. 1997 Duxford Airshow. The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was a German World War II fighter aircraft designed by Willy Messerschmitt in the early 1930s. It was one of the first true modern fighters of the era, including such features as an all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, and retractable landing gear. The Bf 109 was produced in greater quantities than any other fighter aircraft in history, with 30,573 units built alone during 1939-1945. Fighter production totalled 47% of all German aircraft production, and the Bf 109 accounted for 57% of all fighter types produced[1]. View attachment 29
This site has great colour profiles (and some photos) of the different varients, and countries who used the 109: http://www.xs4all.nl/~tozu/me109/index.htm The Israeli Me 109s have always seemed rather incongruous but then again they used a number of aircraft (this is an interesting site too) http://www.spyflight.co.uk/iafvraf.htm
Another great site - seems to cover everything one would need on the 109: http://www.adlertag.de/mainindex.htm
Ahh, cheers Morse. That I didn't know. I recently bought Brian Cull's The Desert Hawks, about the Americans in the Israeli Air Force during their fight for Independence. There are a number of pictures of the 109s in Israeli colours. Howver, I've not had a chance to read the book. An interesting article on the Avia: http://hsfeatures.com/avias199_1.htm
