    Not really as he joined the RAF to fly and being patriotic, he wants to strike back at the Boche!

    So, he'd have to have some leave sometime, even if he doesn't want to?

    They'd give him a desk/instructing job but he could call in some favours to get posted back on ops. Of course, it all might be for nothing and he has to sit out the full term "just like everyone else".

    it would depend on the amount of available pilots, but since it was a theatre of war, then there might not be leave other than sick leave.

    So, what kind of illness could you come down with in the North African desert?

    Various things, sandfly fever, desert sores, gyppy tummy caused by all the sand, etc.
