Just watching a programme about Dad's Army. When discussing Cpl Jones, Clive Dunn suggested that he allowed himself a bit of 'revenge' for his 4 years as a POW. He was captured in Crete.

Roxy missed the programme,(b***er it)but did Clive say which Regiment he served with.

He seems to have been imprisoned at Stalag XVIIIA at one point:

Men alternated between the working groups and being back in the main camp and as the months and years progressed the conditions, the treatment, and most of all the lack of food became much worse. The sports ceased altogether because nobody had enough energy. There were however attempts to keep up morale by staging shows and comedy routines, and one who took part was Clive Dunn (later of Dad’s Army fame).

And he wrote the forward to this book, which seems to confirm the camp:

THE JOY OF FREEDOM by Eric Fearnside. With a foreword Clive Dunn OBE of Dads Army Fame.

Subtitled ‘A graphic account of life in a prisoner of war camp during the Second World War, including some unique photographs, and a selection of humorous short stories.’ Taken prisoner on Crete in June 1941 Eric was sent to Stalag 18A Wolfsberg in Austria. Much of the book describes activities within the camp, especially the theatre and its many productions, including ‘Hawaiian Paradise’ written by Eric himself. A performance of the most elaborate show ever put on at the camp, took place on the football ground and took six months to prepare. The extravaganza, named ‘Roman Holiday’ was followed by the handing out of postcards and the invitation to send them to the regimental paymasters instructing them to pay some of their accumulated credits to the British Red Cross. The staggering amount raised was £32,000 pounds. Softcover, 142 pages incl maps and photos. ISBN 0-9528664-0-4. First published 1996.

Dad's Army News Archive - 1992 - Permission To Speak Sir? (Saga Magazine, February 1992) Clive Dunn Interview

As part of the 1st Armoured Brigade they were attached to the 6th Australian Infantry Division and fought in the Greek Campaign. Fighting as the rearguard in the Corinth Canal Bridge action the regiment was over-run and surrendered losing all senior officers and over 400 men as prisoners of war.
