I love Ronald Searle for many reasons ......

he was born in Cambridge !! ....

he enlisted in the Royal Engineers and in January 1942 he was stationed in Singapore .... after a month of fighting in Malaya - Singapore fell to the Japanese and he was taken prisoner .... he spent the rest of the war a prisoner - first in Changi Prison and then in the Kwai jungle working on the Siam-Burma Death Railway.

..... then of course he was the creator of St Trinian's !!

    Fascinating man ..... !!

I too am a big fan. I have seen a number of his sketches of his POW time (done at great risk), and I also have a copy of The Stolen Journey by Oliver Philpot, which includes sketches by Searle.

I believe there is a book available of his wartime sketches.

I also adore the St Trinian films - I mean the originals, not the gawd-awful remake. Not only funny, but one of my earliest memories of the joys of stockings!! :becky: I soooooo wanted to be like Flash Harry*

*forget Russell Brand's recent prank - I cannot forgive him for butchering a character masterfully created by the wonderful George Cole

I have seen bits of a St Trinian's film - involved a train chase of bank robbers, IIRC - have I missed something?

You have rather. There is something very innocent about the films, even though there is a fair bit of stocking tops etc. Unfortunately, the new version completely missed the point and over-emphesised that part.

I just loved as Joyce Grenfell (an oft forgotten genius) as the bumbling policewoman and Alastair Sim, in drag, as the headmistress.

    Ahhhh, happy days :)

Ah, I see your point. Reminds me of another film, harmless but...I'll think of it eventually.

George Cole was great in St Trinians. I always marvel at a good film - The cast is perfect when you attempt to envisage someone else playing the role. If you are unable to.....................
