I have just been reading Oliver Postgate's obit. He was the guy who created programmes like Bagpuss and Ivor the Engine. Though in no way a reflection on him, I have to admit that I loathed Bagpuss, and I still shudder at the memory of it. To me it was absolute torture inflicted upon me when I used to be off school, either for a hospital visit or whilst recuperating from treatment. At a time when the quality of daytime TV was pretty bad anyway (it was a time when they actually had a 1/2 or hour long programme of yoga carried out by people who could have stepped out of the original version of the Joy of Sex), the choses for a kid were even worse. People see programmes like Bagpuss, Ivor the Engine, etc with nostalgia but I can't see it. So are there any programmes that you hated as a kid? Any that people harped on about but you couldn't see the charm?
Sooty !!!!!!!!! .... what a load of "you know what " !! not quite the learning channel was it ?? Sooty
yep Sooty was way up there. Also the Owl Plates? Was it called that? Hated it. What the hell was Earth Fasts about?
Nothing that springs to mind at the moment. Not exactly kids' shows but I was a teenager at the time so Melrose Place and 90210. Didn't get it then, still don't get it now...or they're clones. The various Degrassi series make me cringe.
We didn't have a TV until just before I left home to get married but as a child I LOATHED listening to Cricket commentaries on the radio. It is one of the few sports that totally bores me even today.
We also didn't have a TV, for reasons that would take too long to tell, until just before I went to Uni. It certainly contributed to my sense of alienation when other kids were talking about Thunderbirds and I didn't know what they were on about. But, my wife did have a TV as a child, and she still likes 70's sitcoms. Recently she bought a "Clangers" DVD (the original being one of Postgate's efforts), and inflicted that on our children. Clearly there was an awful lot that I should be grateful that I missed!
We were just too poor!!! Not even sure if there was daytime tv then anyway. I do remember, as will anybody of my generation, crowding into a tiny sitting room (along with the whole of my Aunt's street) to watch?? the Coronation before the street party began.
There were for the Jubilee but I think much will depend on whether Charles seeks to crown Camilla. It seems to be a more popular option to have King William if this were constitutionally possible.
The next village to ours shut their High Street and had a brilliant party with fair rides, BBQ and a band in the evening to which all were invited.
Ours didn't. And there is nothing whatsoever wrong with The Clangers! Or Bagpuss. Or Button Moon. Puddle Lane. Pidgeon Street. Aaaaaaaaaaaaah happy days.
