For the uneducated non plane person, would you please tell me what the gauges are in the cockpit.

Top Row, (left to right)

Airspeed Indicator, Inclinometer (Nose angle up or down), Turn and Slip Indicator, Tachometer (newer style)

Bottom Row, (left to right)

Altimeter, Compass, Oil Pressure Gauge

That box is a modern day addition. It holds such things as electrical systems and radios. You can see the circuit breakers on the front with an ammeter just above them.

Are there any pictures of the original DH 1? I could only find modelling ones

The thumbnail I posted is a drawing from the History of the De Havilland Aeroplane.

I have never seen a picture, there were only three built, I believe.
the image you posted is not the DH 1, possibly a DH 2.
This was renamed DH(Airco)1, when put into production.

Ignore my post #7 - a completely different aircraft (I am useless at pre-1930s aircraft).

The Biplane 1 and 2 seem to be very similar and the Biplane 2 seems to have become the FE1. Is the correct?

I think the designation of the balsa model should read DH(Airco)1, starting a new series by the army.

Yes, I think that confused me. I was getting the Dehavilland Biplane no.1 and the Airco DH 1 mixed up. The later was introduced several years after the first - the first being a private enterprise by De Havilland.
