Merchant Naval Ship Types No's 1&2 Hi Me Hearties! Have just opened one of my books "Shipping Wonders of the World" by Clarence Winchester, no date so I therefore believe it to be first edition early 1930's. Apart from many items of interest is a series of 40 different typs of Mercantmen. Herewith a sample, if of any interest I will post others over a period. Cheers Keith
Merchant Navy Ship Types Hi Hugh, I can tell by your flags that you will be interested. However their wartime association I can't help. The book is early 1930 so no reference to WWII activity. However they seemed to be very detailed line drawings, that I thought someone would be interested. Each drawing of course has to be scanned, then brought to an acceptable size, so it needs a fair ammount of time. That said the first one is now done, so if I carry these sizes over the time will now be halved. Did you catch my "Lead up to D.Day story" Cheers All the best Keith
I know the RNVR was called the wavey-navy because of the shape/style of their rank insignia, but was there a nickname for the RNR and their "chain" rank insignia?
I don't think my ship or Merchant Navy knowledge is good enough to make any connections so am hoping Hugh and some others can make some links to the pics Keith has graciously posted.
Merchant Ships by Type Hi Andy, The drawings I am posting are well detailed drawings of actual ships, used to represent the various classes and types of ships. If you read the details posted under the drawings they do, in most cases name the actual ship the drawing was made from. I feel sure that if you post one of the names in the address box you will be able to get more detailed information. Cheers Keith
Hello K, I am not aware of an official nickname for the RNR. Interesting the RNR officer chain rank insignia, this is quite old and the modern version was the same as the regular RN officer apart from the letter R in the curl. As of 2007, all reservist insignia has been removed from RNR rank badges. So as far as I am aware there is no distinction between a regular and a reservist at least as far as uniform is concerned. Regards Hugh
Keith, Just a thank you for posting these drawings they are brilliant. I will attempt to put some info on these ships if anybody is interested. Regards and thanks Hugh
Hi Andy, Just tried it, it works, I fed into the address box, " SS Nora Maersk " and up came all that ships details. Cheers Keith PS. Did you find out anything about a DEMS Ship "SS Taranaka"
Thanks Keith, I had seen the names, but didn't make any immediate connection whereas someone like Hugh will most likely know a few things off the top of his head (yes please re further details, thanks Hugh!). I'm at work at present so should really limit my googling but will no doubt succumb as some of those ships are intriguing. Haven't had a chance to follow up the Taranaka yet. I read something about it recently (or saw mention of it) too.
Twickenham ferry & nora maersk Basic details of both ships posted in No#1. TWICKENHAM FERRY official number 163500 built in 1934 for the Southern Railway. Broken up San Esteban de Pravia 26.5.1974. NORA MAERSK built in 1934 for D/S A/S Svendborg (AP Moller Managers) Her short career was caused by a fire in a cargo of copra in the Philippines in 1936, then the damaged ship was sold to Kawasaki Kisen K.K. and refitted in 1938 and renamed TERUKAWA MARU. Almost 50 years old when she was wrecked. Must have seen a few interesting things. A nice pic of her, undated though: Ship Photos : Shipspotting.com - Ship Images, Ship Photos - The worlds largest archive
