Hugh, I always love the "romaticism" (for want of a better word) of reading or seeing an old ship still plying, say, the west coast of Africa etc and then finding out she used to do Atlantic convoys or something like that in her "glory" days.

Yes, I am with you there Andy. I love to see a ship with a history.

Andy is right I think many are interested in the "Grey Funnel Line"

Although I post mostly on the Merchant Navy as I believe them to be the forgotten service, I was RN for many years so go for it Keith.

    Thanks for your interest.

Tanker BRANNAREN official number 1107 built in 1933 for the Royal Swedish Navy.
    1977 renamed VOLCAN
    1988 renamed TIMEX STAR

As far as I can gather she is still sailing under the Lebanese flag. I found this quote online for the year 2005.

"Police said the Lebanese-flagged Timex Star ran the gantlet of radar-controlled Syrian shellfire to deliver its cargo of 660,000 gallons of fuel at Jounieh, 12 miles north of Beirut.

"The captain ducked into a bay north of Jounieh, putting mountains between him and the Syrian radar and blocking it. Then he hugged the coast to slip into port,'' a police spokesman said. The spokesman, who demanded anonymity, said the Syrians used long-range artillery in Moslem west Beirut, from mountains overlooking the Christian enclave and in north Lebanon, in their effort to sink the Timex Star."

    Merchant Navy Ship Types

    Hi Hugh,

Glad they are still of interest to you, it just seems a shame so many were lost or scrapped.
Time passes on and I have no doubt they were usefully re-incarnated.

Will post a few more next week, so watch this space !

The book I'm reading at the moment "Flock of Ships" is really getting me into the atmosphere of the 39/45 era.
    Intro included, for your ref.
    Cheers

Am amazed she is still going and being used commercially and so effectively. Still capable of some "extreme" maneuvering too by the sounds of it!

    Thread #37 Ship #19

Cargo ship CLEMENT official number 162414 built in 1934 for Booth S.S.Co Ltd, Liverpool.

The text below is from the excellent website of Captain Ozires Moraes
You can also see a photo of this ship being shelled by the Graf Spee.

Sixtant - ADM GRAF SPEE - SUNKEN SHIPS - CLEMENT

This British merchant was the first ship to be attacked and sunk by German pocket battleship Adm. Graf Spee. She was intercepted by the look outs of Graf Spee some 70 miles northeast of Recife. Graf Spee stopped the defenseless merchant and gave orders to shut off the radio; however the wireless operator sent a distress call as well as ship's position. When all passengers boarded the lifeboats, SS Clement was swiftly sent to the bottom by the powerful Graf Spee artillery. Graf Spee officers then gave the survivors a course to nearest land and left the area. On 30 Sep 1939, Brazilian merchant Itatinga fished out one lifeboat with survivors from British vessel. The rest reached the port of Maceio some 100 miles south of Recife on the 1st October. Captain Harris, Clement's Master and chief engineer were taken as prisoners and questioned. Another crewmember suffered minor injuries during abandonment and received adequate treatment.
