I have a number of Japanese Index Cards. These were records kept by the Japanese for each British POW (no doubt they were also used for other Alied POWs and possibly civilians).

While some of the information on these cards is in English (eg Name, Rank, Address, NOK) many cards contain Japanese hand written and stamped(?) text. This text is often only a few lines (see attached example) these could, if translated, help my research of the individuals named on the cards.

I believe that the Japanese "language" used on these JICs is not in common use nowadays.

I thought I'd found a translator on another forum but, they have let me down. Does anyone know of a translator or where I could get these cards translated?

    Thanks

    Peter

    Hi Peter

I'm afraid our community is rather small at the moment and as far as I know there are no members with the skills you require. I would have to say that your best bet is either a comercial translation service or making contact with a Higher Education Institute. The latter maybe the best if funds are limited. One doing Japanese History maybe willing to assist if you suggest that students have a look at them.

    Have you contacted FEPOW?

    Hi Kyt,
I feel sure that if you contacted the Japanese Embassy / Japanese Trade Mission website they would gladly help.
Just a thought, they were very helpful in tracing an automatic car Ariel manufacturer for me and getting me a supply of replacement collapsing rods.
    Cheers

If not, I may be able to help.
