    The question really arises about the provenance of many others being sold on their and elsewhere

    Thinking out loud, how hard would it be for governments to enact laws to demand proof of ownership of medals?

    In America the Stolen Valor Act of 2005 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia makes it harder for the sale of medals. I think it is a minefield. A lot of medals are ungraved and so tracking them back when stolen is difficult.

    And I have said this before - I can understand that family members may need to sell medals because of financial need but I still think it is wrong. If they have to be sold then I would rather see a system of state subsidisation for museums to have them

    I do not agree with their sale either however they should be able to provide legal ownership.
