This time of year the weather is warm and I tend to leave the outside door open. A few minutes ago, after coming in from outside I was alarmed to be confronted by a four foot snake in my front room! My snake identification is not too good but I recognized this one as a non venomous Black Snake. These snakes are constrictors and can grow in excess of six feet long, they are a "good" snake in as much as they take care of rodents and "bad" snakes. I didn't want to kill it and have snake mess to deal with or possibly just wound it and have it disappear into the house so I had to make a decision and fast! Slowly retreating I went back outside found a pole about three feet long and returned to do battle if necessary. The snake was still there in a defensive coil as my dog bounced around it barking. The snake was hissing and making half hearted warning strikes at the dog. With my pole I distracted its head and then with a yell of "Crikey" I made a swoop of Irwinesk proportions and seized the reptile by the tail. Rushing through the kitchen and back door I carried this wriggling creature outside where it managed to get free and disappear beneath my deck which I believe is from whence it came. Now I have to make a decision as to what to do. I have seen other snakes that I could not identify going under my deck. I generally leave them alone if they leave me alone but this one has crossed the line (or doorstep) and its time to take action. I have seen a product called "Snake Away" advertised but have mixed feelings about putting down chemicals. One of the joys of living in Alabama.
Ok, I really really really wish I hadn't read this thread. I have a serious snake phobia and if that had been me then I would now be in need for a CPR or six feet under from a coronary
metal plate, attach car battery then wait for snake to levitate. Am going to try it on the metal shutter doors at work :>
Hah..the perils of summer...doors open, light breeze to compliment the glass of Medoc...and thankfully, living in a land and place where the only danger I have is of getting mugged by a squirrel or bombed by a robin....

DL, I've heard of an electronic pulse system that you can place around the house that sends vibrations through the ground the snakes won't like. stop-snakes.com No idea how good they are but... I'm not a huge fan of snakes and have thought about getting a couple for our place.
Hey David, don't you have wire sceen doors ?? I live in a snake infested area and it is a cardinal sin not to keep our screen doors closed. I am also a snake hater :butcher::dwarf:

Snakes can be very usefull..The Blacksnake(which is the snake DL is talking about) kills and eats Rattlesnakes and Copperheads.

In some palces,there is a wild nature company that the public can call up and that company will send out professinals crew that handle wild animals. They will take the wild animal of you're hands and lokk after it and see if it can be let go back into the wild. I think America would have this survise too.
