P/O Smith's death is listed as accidental over the North Sea on the Australian Roll of Honour. The body must have been picked up from the water or washed up. A Hurricane Mk I in very late 1942? Ah, 288 was an anti-aircraft co-operation squadron. That would explain the 'old' Hurri. Apparently they operated a variety of aircraft for target-towing and simulated fighter attacks.
