http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vickers_Wellington I'm rather intrigued by the Wimpy's maritime work. Certainly a versatile and perhaps underrated aircraft. Another aircraft that hasn't survived well. RAFM and Brooklands are the only complete (ish) examples? Designed by one of Kitty's favourite people - Barnes Wallis. http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/general/sub.cfm?source=feature/wilnis/salvage http://uboat.net/allies/aircraft/wellington.htm http://youtube.com/watch?v=Qlx_FoDR8Qg
It's always fascinated me how the Wellington lead to the Eden Project - I'm sure you lot can work out what I mean.
The strength of a geodetic structure? Funnily enough, parts of Wellington fuselages have been recovered from their peacetime work as...greenhouses!
Couple of lovely shots of the geodesic design: http://brianamarshall.fotopic.net/p28597387.html http://brianamarshall.fotopic.net/p28597388.html
Not a clue! Something to do with Wallis, Eden or the Wellington's development? Remember we are only colonials!
Though the idea of the geodesic design has been around for a long time, it was first developed properly for buildings and construction just after WW1. A direct link could probably be plotted from then to the Eden Project, but the Wellington bomber brought the potentials of such a design to a much wider audience. So I personally believe (or like to think anyway) that the Wellington played a part in the Eden Project.
hmmm, my ribs are really starting to hurt now. I now know how that poor Nessie Wimpy feels with her ribs all battered, bruised and on show (though mine are well padded with fat).
As long as when you're fixed up you don't show your bent props like the Nessie girl! Spidge, you didn't? Surely that means I did then? Or should I say, my wife did?! :becky: Right then...Dear Provenance Fighters, I bring to your attention the RAAF beaufighter you have for sale that is currently under airworthy rebuild. I agree to your asking price if you agree to free shipping to Western Australia. How would you like me to pay? Cash or cheque? Kind regards... :becky::becky::becky:
Dear Provenance Fighters, keep your steenking Beau and give me a MOSSY NOW DAMMIT! spidge, Kyt was making a rather stretched comment about the Wimpy's geodetic airframe leading to the construction of the Eden Projects geodetic biomes. And don't forget the Wimpy's airframe was a direct result of Wallis's design for the airship R100. or was it 101? Am sure it was 100.
