Right boys and girls. I'd like to see some unusual aircraft accidents. Not battle damage but actual accidents.

    Here's one to kick off

You know when I read the title of the thread, that was the pic I thought of! I think there's a similar pic of a couple of Aussie Ansons "mating".

    *OK, no tree but still....

No 2 on the B-17 is feathered. Interesting.

There's always something funny about tail up pictures

I don't have any details on the picture - date, location, units etc

Oooh, Mk I Spit with metal three-bladed prop. Cool!

The B-17 appears to have its rudder hard over but this could have been caused by the force of the collision not an indication of evasive action. However, I can't see the Lanc's port undercarriage perhaps indicating the B-17 has sliced through it or the starboard leg of the Fort is hiding it.

Chin turret on the Fort appears crunched as well but I can't work out how she could have ended up on her nose with the Lanc on her.

I think the tail/rudder of the B17 is the clue - it actually looks like it's back is broken, so creating a V - hence it's nose up. See the way the belly turret is so close to the ground - almost touching it?

Good point. I also think the weight of the Lanc is on the B-17 going by the compressed starboard leg of the Fort and the Lanc's one barely touching the ground. That gives the impression of the Lanc riding up on the Fort though.

Hmm, doors on B-17 are open...hmm, no hydraulics, doors flop open, brakes non-existent. Would tie in with apparent battle-damaged No 2. You wouldn't go to the trouble of feathering a prop in a collision. You'd potentially cut fuel/switches and get the hell out?

I reckon the B17 had already made an emergency landing earlier - and the Lanc ran into it later (possible same day/night or the B17 wouldhave been cleared) - possible brake failure?

Yep, I was just coming to that conclusion. The Lanc has ridden up on the B-17. If the Fort had sliced underneath the Lanc, the forward fuse of the Lanc would be much more heavily damaged from the prop on No 4.

I was reading about a U.S. Aviator in the Pacific who during WW2 crashed his aircraft on landing. The aircraft's momentum carried it on through the flight line where it proceeded to wipe out some 70 aircraft either from collison or fire.

For the life of me I cannot find where I read this, perhaps Kyt can, he's good at that kind of stuff.

    No pressure then :becky:

I don't recall it off the top of my head, David, but I'll have a look around in a bit.

This is Hampden AE 116 one of the aircraft my father flew in. They crashed at Waddington after running out of fuel.

That's unusal markings David. Lower case "a"? Most unusal indeed.

I agree, not seen that before. I'm wondering if one of the people standing around in the picture could be my Dad! Can you tell if any of them have a fag going? Apparently they used to smoke in the aircraft all the time!

Sorry David, have just tried enlarging it to have a look see but I just can't tell. And slapped wrists for smoking in the plane - was completely frowned upon.

I dont know about that! But look at the scene in Tora! Tora! Tora! with the kittyhawk running amok! It was a accident and the men you see running away were scared for their lives!

This is a real head scratcher. I haven't been able to pinpoint anything yet. Might have to go the hard slog way, and check some serials.
