Hi Just wondered if anyone had any knowledge of a plane crash in I think Aden in the mid fifties? It was bringing a group of National Servicemen home on leave and crashed on take off, I think. The brother of someone I knew was on board and something triggered the memory the other day but I couldn't recall any more details. Any clues where I can look to find out more? Thanks CTNana
CTNana, did the brother die in the crash? If so, then could you give us the name. With the name we can check the records, and there are books that list post-war military accidents. And with the name we can establish the date using the new Serve Personel Memorial database. K
Hi Kyt I just knew that you would know!!!! Yes, sadly he and I think all others on board did die. Not 100% sure that his first name was Tony / Anthony Jacklyn. Bet I've got the year wrong and have probably mis-spelled his name!!!! Cheers CTNana
CTNana, are you sure about the spelling of the surname? It doesn't appear on the Armed Forces Memorial database (which covers all military deaths since the end of the War)
No I'm not sure! But there aren't too many variations that it can be. Jackelyn / Jacelyn / Jackelin / Jacklin / Jackling. Can you search with a wild card operator? CTN
Yep, I've tried with just the first two letter i.e JA, and the closest I came was : Surname JACKLIN Forenames/Initials Alan Keith David Rank Tpr Service Army Service Number 23137847 Regiment/Corps 10 HUSSARS Place of Birth/Home Town Barking, Essex Date of Birth 29 November 1936 Age 20 Date of Death 17 April 1957 Cemetery Name Habbaniya Cemetery Address Iraq Grave Section 5 Grave Row B Grave Number 1-7 Included on Armed Forces Memorial Yes Included on Roll of Honour Yes Right region but wrong first names. http://www.forcesmemorial.org.uk/roll-of-honour.asp
Thanks Kyt His name probably was Alan (Tony was the golfer wasn't he?!!!!). I'm surprised that he was born in Essex though. Is there a way of finding out more about what happened? Do you have to have the Service Number before you can make an enquiry? CTNana
if it is the one that I am thinking of, it was a york and it chrashed with the loss of everyone except the wireless op! I used to work beside him in Bldg 118 at Pitreavie Castle, he used to put a memorial advert in the Telegraph every 21st of November, the anniversary of the chrash. Sorry but I do not have any other details
No, the only thing I really needed was a date or range of dates for a crash. And his buriel seems to be in the right locale. I can now ask some people who own the appropriate volumes (there's always one more book that I need to buy) to check for accidents and any details. Will get back to you when I hear anything
Thanks Morse What a coincidence. Looking at his age it looks more like he was finally coming home from National Service rather than just coming home on leave. I remember it as being a local tragedy, not in Essex!!! CTNana
http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19570417-1 Vickers Valetta C Mk1 VW832 going from Aqaba in Jordan to Habbaniya in iraq but within five minutes of the place taking off it crashed killing everyone on board. The aircraft lost its left wing after encountering clear air turbulence. I have to find the 3 RAF crew names but the passengers were: 10th Royal Hussars Sgt. Goldstraw W. Cpl. Patterson R. L/Cpl. Kyt You are truly amazing! That is definitely him. I was so sure that he was coming home because it was the end of his National Service but obviously not. 50 years ago!! I wonder if his sister is still alive? Thanks again CTNana
Not amazing at all, CTNana - but being an insomniac has its advantages like LOTS of time for google :becky: Glad it was the right man, though "glad" does not seem an appropriate word to use in this context.
