Well, I figured I need something light after one of the recent threads on here so since there are a few whisky/whiskey drinkers on here, how about we relate some our experiences/misadventures related to the fine tipple...or even just what our favourites are. Now, I'm reasonably new this world as I can no longer drink copious amounts of beer so decided to be more civilised. I am quite partial to Bushmills Black Bush after advice from Kyt - goes rather well while watching In Which We Serve! My first purchase (not counting bottles of Grant's) was a Vat 69 last year - big mistake and have been re-educated as a result. Bowmore's single malt from the Isle of Islay is not bad and I've got a couple more in my cupobard I can't remember other than a 15 year old Dalwhinnie's which hopefully tastes as good as it looks. Can anyone recommend a good double malt?
I would describe myself as non-drinker but I do enjoy the occasional glass of champagne or really good brandy. After touring Scotland many years ago I added fine malts to my list!!
Me too, CT, mainly as I don't want to waste most of the next day! Funny, I must have grown up somewhat...
Taliskar is another lovely sipping scotch. A nice sweet, mellow but flavoursome one. If you want a kick in the teeth, all iodine and smoke, then try one of the Islay ones. Not really my favourites, but every so often a dram of Isle of Jura makes a nice change.
Gentlemen, MAJOR apologies but can I suggest the following: Jameson Irish Whiskey I know its not a scotch but its outstanding. I LOVE the Scottish malts and will NEVER desert them but if you want to try something a bit different, smooth and peaty then give this a go. If however you wish to stick to a pure scotch then try a Talisker or a Laphroig, both are peaty and light coloured but have an amazing flavour. Whatever you do don't touch the cheap dross, it gives the real thing a bad name......
You would not believe the trouble I had getting hold of a bottle of Laphroig as a degree bribe for my course leader. If any of you ever make it to Bakewell in Derbyshire, search out the little whisky shop in a courtyard, and go see the man. You will come out over an hour later, dosed up to the eyeballs on dozens of tasters of whisky's you have never seen before. As to myself only had a little whisky, mostly Bells? Not sure, was rather smooth and quite liked it. But as alcohol gives me a migraine i don't drink. Am told there is a Welsh whisky that tastes like battery acid.
The only welsh whisky I know of is the Penderyn range. Never tasted any of the classes so couldn't say. Mixed reviews on the quality in the guides though
I'm not sure but I think I've got one in the cupboard bought duty free by Jodi on her work trip to India in June. Haven't opened it yet as still working my way through the Bowmore's which I find okay but not as good as Bushmill's. I'll have to check the cupboard tonight. Haven't come across a Talisker's yet. Sláinte Mhath I like Glenfiddich and I don't mind Glenmorangie or Laphroaig even partial to a bottle of Bowmore's. In fact I wouldn't say no to Bushmill's, Johnny Walker, Chivas or Taliskar. OK I think you get the picture - I kinda like them all. Strangely, I am enjoying a nice glass of white wine as I type eep: Welcome aboard this ship Matt G - the crew are all three sheets to the wind. I wish!!!! I know that it is a euphemism for tipsy and it presumably has a naval origin, but what does the saying actually mean?
Thanks Andy. I hadn't realised that one could be one, two or three sheets gone!!!! I was twenty seven before I smoked and thirty before I had my first drink. Haven't achieved the one sheet to date!!!
