Theres so much that was kept secret for so many years ..... and so much more to find out I bet ..... that Kim Philby has a lot to answer for ... I still find it hard to believe he knew so much ... especially when so many people knew the type of man he was !!

    Interesting story.

I have done quite a bit of research on the Aussie Services Reconnaissance Department/Special Operations Australia and it appears that they too did not quite disband at the end of the war. Instead they became known under the generic title of "Special Operations Organisation" and were absorbed into the Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS) where the unit was active until the mid-1980s when a training SNAFU in Melbourne put a stop to ASIS' paramilitary adventuring. The ASIS paramilitary taskings are now thought to be undertaken by the SASR, in a similar fashion to the "Increment" in the UK.

For a little more on the secret squirrel European side of things post-war, I would highly recommend Danielle Ganser's book "Nato's Secret Army - Gladio". (Amazon.com: NATO's Secret Army: Operation Gladio and Terrorism in Western Europe (Contemporary Security Studies): GANSER DANIELE: Books). Gladio was active in the UK under the auspices of MI6/SIS. Fascinating stuff and right up ABMM's alley with secret supply caches and bunkers and ... Sorry. I get carried away sometimes.

    Cheers.
