I haven't read a whole lot about Iwo Jima, but enough to form the impression that there was some opposition to Kuribayashi's plans for the defence of the island; that is forgoing a major attempt to throw back the US invasion force at the beach level in favour of a defense in depth. Can anyone recommend any sources that may discus opposition to K's strategy, especially how it may have impacted K's fortification of the island prior to the invasion. I am also curious to know if there was active opposition to his strategy during the invasion itself, and whether it may have impacted negatively upon the Japanese conduct of the battle.
