Info wanted on aircrew KIA

    Hi Guys,
    I know many of you have access to resources other than CWGC or Lost Bombers. If anyone has any info (esp. circumstances of their death) on these men that are on CWGC but not on Lost Bombers I'd be very grateful...

    Took off 12.30 hrs from Leuchars in his Beaufort N1075 for solo training, but crashed in the mouth of the river Eden on the approach. His body was later recovered off Thornaby

    Sgt. I W Jenkins/25 Jun 45/Runnymede
    Tiger Moth DE215 of 15EFTS Crashed Ullswater
    Navigation exercise. Pilot allowed unauthorised control of aircraft whilst flying low over lake, and Jenkins (who was the Navigator) allowed undercarriage to strike water. Pilot survived. The Board of Enquiry criticised the unit for its failures, including not removing control column from navigator’s seat.


    Flt Lt L. M. Lewis/7 Sep 44/buried Surrey... odd one this as he is gazetted as retiring in July 1944.
    He relinquished his commission due to ill-health but may still have been on active service when he died of his illness.

    He was pilot of Defiant L6981 of 1484 Flight which crashed during gunnery training at Scurfdike Farm, near Hutton Cranswick. Also killed was Sgt. Arthur Owen Potts.

    Blenheim N3612. A flash bomb exploded under aircraft on release at Odstone bombing range blowing off tail. F/O R Jones RNZAF and F/O S Cotton also killed. 140 was an Army Co-Operation squadron

    Stirling EF153 Aircraft took off Lakenheath at 22.30 on SOE operation and crashed 10 mins later near Brandon Rd and Shakers Rd, Lakenheath. Believed a serious technical fault had developed with undercarriage as the unit was being manualy wound to the up position when he accident occurred

    Killed whilst attacking enemy bombers which were attempting to bomb Malta’s Grand Harbour, it is believed his Hurricane crashed into a German Ju-88. I don’t have a serial number.

    Flt Lt K. W. Noble - Buried in Ayrshire - tricky one, I'm told he doesn't appear in the usual records. Accident?

    Kyt, you are an absolute star. You'll have guessed that I'm no historian, just someone who wants to try and ensure these men are remembered. Someone felt the same as me because the school roll of honour was removed before it was refurbished (actually to become a police station... hmmmmm). Anything such as an aircraft s/n allows me to go off on my merry way and try and flesh out the info. Links would be appreciated so I can credit the info.

    Whitley N1440 of 19 OTU. Took off Kinloss with a screened pilot, 3 pupil pilots and 2 wireless operators. While flying at 1200 feet, near Forress, Moray, the nose dropped suddenly and diving steeply, it smashed into the ground at burst into flames

    There is a memorial to the crew at:
    19 OTU, RAF,Roll of Honour, Sgt H D Gaywood.

    Blenheim V5420 crashed when it overshot landing during heavy rain after air test, Thorney Island. Also killed were P/O S R E Weatherle

    Liberator BZ939 took off at 15.23 hrs. on 10.11.44 on special operation in Rangoon - Moulmein - Mergui area reported missing. No message was received from the aircraft and no information available.

    Carden was 'killed on active service' according to the local paper. His father was Asst Contracts Manager at Vickers. He probably knew my Grandad. I haven't got any more info though.

    61 sqdn and 44 sqdn aircrew

    bradshaw r5517 no cause of loss and no place of loss.bradshaw is buried in the sage cemetery.ja897,p/o drew,a/c was shot down by a n/fighter flown by lt peter spoden,11/njg5,flying from griefswald.a/c was hit between the inner and outer port engines which set the wing fuel tanks alight.a/c crashed at forst hagen,between hanshagen and griefswald at 01.55 hrs.hope this helps,

    clive,the n/fighter pilot responsible for the demise of p/o drew's lancaster has a book on his wartime experiences.titled enemy in the dark,isbn no is1841450324,printed by cerberus publishing.chapter ten deals with ja879,it was his first night victory.regards graham
