Thanks for the welcome. I have come across the medal records of my great uncle whilst researching my family tree, and am not sure where to find out more about where he served etc. The information I have so far is: Robert Kitching 1/4 suffolk regiment no. 2060, I am going from memory as my membership has now expired on Ancestry and I foolishly didn't copy it, he was retired in June in 1916. OK so you obviously know he was in the Suffolks, and you have luckily got his service number from the medal card. Do you know why he was retired half way through the war? Was it injury? Your best hope is to pray his service records are not part of the 80% of the burnt records lost to a Kampfgeshwader incendary in WW2. are you within strikign distance of Kew record office? They will probably hold some records for the Suffolks, but not all. The next primary point of call is the suffolks museum, and there will be one somewhere even if they have amalgamated since WW1 with another regiment. You need to contact the Suffolk museum and ask if it is possible to get any info from them as it is down to the regimental museums to help those whose service records have been lost. They will probably be able to tell you more about your great uncle, what he was and why he was retired. From that it should be possible to go through the regimental diaries to find where his unit/battallion was on any given day. Other than doing some serious foot slogging to track those down i don't know what else to suggest right now.
