My Belgian grandfather was wounded rescuing someone while serving in Belgian infantry and was awarded the Croix De Guerre. How can I find out more details of his citation.
Hi Maple Villa, The Croix de guerre , established on the 25th October 1915, is a military decoration of the Kingdom of Belgium, presented primarily as an award for bravery or other military virtue on the battlefield. ( info from Wikipedia) You get also get info from http://www.firstworldwar.com/atoz/croixdeguerre.htm and also http://www.firstworldwar.com/atoz/croixdeguerre_b.htm hope this helps. regards Keith
Yes, this is helpful, thank you. However I was hoping to get specifics of his citation. I have only family folk-lore (and the medal) but our folk-lore has been wrong on other issues. Regards Janet
Francois Abdon Van Mechelen. private Begian Artillary. born Montenaken, about 1893. The fabled "family folklore" is that he carried a wounded colleague (his officer?) back from behind enemy lines while himself wounded (in the leg/ankle) regards Janet
Hi Janet, If you contact the Belgian Embassy, as they should hold lists of those medals issued and why. I found these Van Mechelen's at the National Archives are they related to you, here is the link for them http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/...atid=10&pagenumber=1&querytype=1&mediaarray=* and i found stuff in the Belgium Archives here is the link for you http://search.arch.be/en/zoeken-door-alle-gegevens/result?trefwoord=Francois Abdon Van Mechelen regards Keith
