Hi, I have just started researching my Great Grandads involvement in WWI. I have a copy of his Service Record, Name Frederick Pittwood, corps 1 Hamps R, Rank Pte, Regtl No. 3/2324. Date of entry therein 12.11.14 I believe that makes him an 'Old Contemptible'? I would like to know why he has a 3 prefix in his Regimental number? My thoughts are 3rd (Reserve) Battalion? Then posted to 1st Bn Hampshire Regiment? Cheers Bivvi
Hi Bivi, He is an Old Contemptible, your right about that. He has an early Regt No but probably did transfer over to the 1st Battalion at the start of the war. Did he survive the war? Sniper
Cheers Sniper, Yes he did survive the war, infact part way through it he transferred Regiment to the RGA, but I don't know why. I don't know the date he passed away but I think it may have been in the 50's or 60's. Bivvi
As you have his war record you will know where he saw action. When did he transfer to the RGA and do you know what unit he went to? Sniper
I made a mistake it's not his Service Record I have, it's his MIC instead. But I have since found out he seems to have terminated his engagement with the Hampshire Regiment on Nov 1915, and was free later to re-sign, which he did on Jul 1916 at the Plymouth Citadel, joining the Royal Garrison Artillery. Unfortunately I don't know what Unit or Battery he went to. Cheers Bivvi
Bivi, Its very odd that he was allowed to terminate his engagement with the Hampshires especially during a war. My giess is that he became medically unfit and the army terminated his engagement but he worked his socks off to get his fitness back and by July 1916 he was fit enough to re-join. If he did not see action then he would not be an 'Old Comtemptible'. It is possible that he remained at depot because of his fitness. Does his MIC say that he is entitled to the 1914/15 Star? Sniper
