Looking for information about my great grandfathers WW1 Army service he served in the East Surrey Regiment during the war. S/3580 Private Charles William Edwards. I have his medal card, I believe his service records to have been burnt during WW2. Any information or links to websites would be great. Cheers Gary

i believe he was only WW1..

his hat is different to those on the other photo..i also dont know when he discharged, as i believe service records after 1920 havn't been made public..and they are still working on the remaining service records that wern't burnt...living in australia is making this task a little more difficult...

    g'day keith

i have had a good look at ancestory, with no luck yet....i know where he was born , marriedand pasted away, not able to confirm any addresses between those dates..
born wellesley place, pancras....married prince of wales rd, london and died prince of wales rd, london....

what i have noticed is on his marriage certificate it doesn't list the 'S' with his service number, it has 3580 Private East surrey Regiment..which is dated 1918...the 'S' was on the medal card

Hi here is the info for you

    1. http://www.findmypast.co.uk/ is for find my past, go to millitary which is a drop down medal type in info on military you will get a list of hits, scroll down and you should have a hit for DCM and at the bottom is the Surrey regiment registration. you would need to join or first time use the 14 day trial which you can cancel before the 14 days is up to view content.
    2. The S before his Reg service number on the medal card means Service

    all the best

    Hi

I noticed on the card he was part of the 2 battalion East Surrey Regiment.
here is a list of their operations:

    2nd Battalion
August 1914 : in Chaubattia, India. Returned to England, landing Devonport 23 December 1914. Moved to Winchester and attached to 85th Brigade in 28th Division.
Landed at Le Havre 19 January 1915.
October 1915 : moved to Egypt and went on to Salonika, arriving 1 December 1915.

He entered service on 23/12/1914 which would place him in Devonport see above.

and the 1A at the bottom means His First theatre of War, that he first served in was France and Belgium

    regards

    Keith
