    Hi Cheryl and welcome

    http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/...asp?Edoc_Id=4230442&queryType=1&resultcount=3

i see you have a family tree on Ancestry couldn't you find his service record on there?
If not it was destroyed during the 1940 blitz, like others
If you have his medal cards it will help you map out what he was doing.

Once you have been to the link and download his medal card put it on line and we should be able to help you more.

    Hi Cheryl.

Right here is his regimental badge [IMG]

    1. L/Corporal Alfred Miller was in The Green Howards (Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own Yorkshire Regiment)
    2. Th 9th battalion was part of The British 23rd Division was a New Armydivision that was sent to France in August, 1915, under the command of Major-General Sir James Melville Babington. During the First World War the division served on the Western Front until October 1917 when it moved to Italy.
    3. Battle of Broodseinde Ridge is where Alfred Miller was killed,
The Battle of Broodseinde was the most successful Allied attack of the Battle of Passchendaele

    Info from wikapedia below:

No formal artillery preparation was conducted before 4 October, except for the normal heavy counter-battery fire and destructive fire on German strong-points. In an attempt to mislead the Germans as to the date and time of the infantry attack, when a hurricane bombardment was to be fired at zero hour, "practice" barrages were begun on 27 September. The practice barrages increased to two barrages a day from 1 October. Despite the ruse of using practice barrages, "a very reliable agent" informed the Germans that an attack was coming from as early as 1 October. The battle was almost called off, when heavy rain began again on 2 October, turning parts of the ground into a marsh. British Intelligence predicted the changes being made by the Germans, in response to the defeats of 20 and 26 September in an intelligence summary of 1 October, which led to the British being prepared for Operation Hohensturm, the big German counter-attack intended to recapture the area around Zonnebeke on 4 October.
Between 26 September and 3 October the Germans attacked and counter-attacked at least 24 times. Operation Hohensturm, a bigger German organised counter-attack, intended to recapture the area around Zonnebeke was planned for 4 October.

Here is a link to the Green Howard's site they should be able to give you alot more info and probably some info on Alfred that might of been lost.

    kind regards

    Keith

    Hi Cheryl,

He has only one card on their as the others are related to different Alfred Millers as i have checked.
Alfred has two medals the Victory and British medals, the (do) in the British medal section means that they where both issued at the same time.
One thing shows he was a private at the time when he got those medals on the card. otherwise their would be another date in the section for the medals.
and his rank would of changed as well.
As he was killed he would have also got a WW1 death plaque, which was given to the family with his name on it.
Do you have these images below in attached files.

Know worry your not a pain that's what we are here for to help.
Yes the 8th battalion is the Green Howard's as well, and as for the other gentleman leave it with me

    regards

    Keith

    Hi

    Info from 1914 1918.net

This is the Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment) 9th Battalion

    9th (Service) Battalion
Formed at Richmond on 26 September 1914 as part of K3 and in October attached to 69th Brigade, 23rd Division. Moved to Frensham and in February 1915 went on to Folkestone and Maidstone in Kent.
    26 August 1915 : landed at Boulogne.
November 1917 : moved with the Division to Italy.
September 1918 : returned to France.
    17 September 1918 : attached to 74th Brigade, 25th Division.

This is the Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment)
    8th Battalion

    8th (Service) Battalion
Formed at Richmond on 22 September 1914 as part of K3 and in October attached to 69th Brigade, 23rd Division. Moved to Frensham and in February 1915 went on to Folkestone and Maidstone in Kent.
    26 August 1915 : landed at Boulogne.

Mathew Baxter was killed in the opening Phases of

    The Battle of the Somme
    1 July - 18 November 1916

    The first phase
In this opening phase, the British assault broke into and gradually moved beyond the first of the German defensive complexes on the Somme. Success on the first day in the area between Montauban and Mametz led to a redirection of effort to that area, for the initial attack was defeated with huge losses north of Mametz. There was a stiff fight for Trones Wood and costly, hastily planned and piecemeal attacks that eventually took La Boisselle, Contalmaison and Mametz Wood.
