Hello, My usual speciality is the Polish Airmen of 304 Squadron in WW2 but I am currently trying to help a colleague track her grandfather's military history in WW1 - and I am like a fish out of water! I have a group photograph of him and friends in what appears to be a fusiliers uniform, but his medal card indicates that he was in the Royal Garrison Artillery. Can anybody help, please?
Hi Neville, Welcome aboard. Personally, I don't know much about such things. But, you could try posting in the "Looking for Someone." section of the forum. You can find it by clicking on Forums - Research - Looking for Someone. Hope you find what you are looking for!
He may have started by joining a Fusilier regiment but transferred to the Royal Garrison Artillery before he was posted abroad. The Medal Card only shows what units he served in AFTER leaving Britain.
I was lucky enough to find 4 of my Great Uncles and my Grandfathers service records for WWI on the website Ancestry.co.uk. It can be a long search if you have a common surname but if you are successful the records can tell you quite a lot about the person. Unfortunately many of the records were destroyed in WWII
