Hello all, I am looking for any information about my great great uncle H C Roynon 1227, who served with the Royal Engineers during WW1. His unit was 1st South Midland Field Company ( Royal Engineers) and he was killed on the 15th February 1915 aged 25. Could anyone shed anymore info on him ? Many thanks James
Hello James, Henry Colin Roynon - birth registered in the first quarter of 1890, at Axbridge, Somerset. The son of Thomas Shorland Roynon, and Eliza Roynon nee Cottle, of Church Farm, Churchill, Bristol. From the photo you have posted, I presume you will already know that Henry is interred at Wytschaete Military Cemetery, Belgium - grave ref. 11A. F. 1. According to his MIC, his date of entry was 22nd December 1914 - awarded BWM, VM & 1914-15 Star. The 1911 census has Henry listed as having been a motor engineer. Hope this helps. M.
Hello Montag, Thankyou very much for all of this infomation that you have given me. All I knew was he was buried in Belguim and that he was from Somerset where the family are still farmers. It's great to see the medals he received, and his trade. Would there be anyway of finding out his fate ? Many thanks James
James, Given that Henry was not an officer, I would say it is doubtful that any 'official' record exists of his fate. Often, death certificates will only furnish you with the primary cause of death and not the circumstances surrounding it. A long-shot might be local newspaper archives, a family bible, a chance inscription on the back of a family photo, or even information submitted to a genealogy website/forum by another family member, etc. Failing that, the war diary for his unit may provide you with details of the Regiment's movements on or around the time he fell. Hopefully, a more knowledgeable member may be able to offer more helpful suggestions. Regards, M.
