    The following posts is data that I have collated from photographs that I have taken of headstones of the fallen, (war graves) and RUC, the fallen who who are commemorated on headstones, wreaths, poppy cross memorials, but who are buried in other parts of the world, and those who died as civilians. The burial location will be given.

    Comber Cemetery, County Down.


    DEMPSTER David J, Private 308611, Royal Air Force died 11th February 1919 aged 19, in Fifeshire Military Hospital . He was the son of Samuel and Alice who in 1911 were living at 3, Ballyloughan, Comber, County Down. He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    FINLAY James, Private 3189, 2nd Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers died 19th January 1919. He was the son of Frank and Catherine Finlay; husband of Elizabeth Finlay, of 4, High Street, Comber. Served over 16 years in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and more than 2 years in the Royal Irish Rifles. Born at Comber. He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    FISHER Thomas James, Rifleman 17637, 13th Royal Irish Rifles died 29th September 1917 aged 20. He was the son of Robert J of High Street, Comber. He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.
    Some notes from what remains of his army record.
    He enlisted on the 17th September 1914 aged 19 years and 2 months. He gave his occupation as a labourer and lived at Comber. He embarked for France on the 3rd October 1915 until 28th September 1916. He was posted to England for some reason then on the 17th March 1917 he embarked once again for France. On the 6th June 1917 he was transferred form a hospital in Boulogne, France to Grove Military Hospital, Tooting, London suffering from Tuberculosis of the Lung. He passed away at 11-50 am on the 9th October 1917 at Grove Military Hospital.

    GLOVER Alexander Rifleman G/695, 16th Royal Irish Rifles, transferred. to as (513447) 889th Area Employment Coy. Labour Corps. he died 9th February 1919 aged 24, from pneumonia at his home in Comber. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted on the 12th January 1915, embarked for France from Southampton on the 2nd October 1915. He was slightly wounded on the 4th July 1916. he received a gun shot wound to his right hand. He was treat at 110st Field Ambulance then at 11th Casualty Clearing Station at Harve. He rejoined his battalion on the 30th July 1916.He was the son of Alexander of Castle Street, Comber, County Down He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    McCLOUD Thomas James, Sergeant , Observer 1066739, 18th Squadron, Royal Air Force (VR) killed on active service 6th November 1942 aged 24. He was the son of Samuel and Martha of Comber, County Down. He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    McGREEGHAN Hugh Driver 261264, 321st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He died of pneumonia 19th November 1918 aged 18 and was the son of Hugh and Jane of Maxwell Court, Comber. He was born at Unicarville, Ballymaglaff, County Down. He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.


    SERVICE DEATH
    WATTERSON Thomas, Private 24275242 3rd Ulster Defence Regiment died 7th November 1982 aged 45. He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    DAY Channing Amanda, Corporal Q1055235,
    3 Medical Regiment, Royal Army Medical Corps, killed in Afghanistan 24th October 2012 aged 25. She is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland

    GIBB Thomas, Junior Technician T8283118, Royal Air Force, stationed at RAF Cottesmore died 25th August 1992. He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    SMYTH Robert (Roy) killed on active service with the Operations Platoon, 3rd Ulster Defence Regiment 6th January 1980 aged 18. He was one of a section of four in the lead vehicle on a two vehicle patrol near Castlewellan, County Down. On their return to Ballykinlar Camp their vehicle was blown up by a 600lb home made land mine. He and private Jim Cochran were trapped under water underneath their vehicle in the crater which was filling up with water from a broken water main caused by the explosion. Three had died at the scene, two from fractured skulls and one may have drowned. He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    HERRON Trevor, Private 24482370, Ulster Defence Regiment died 4th December 1978 aged 25 in a road traffic accident He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.


    RUC DEATHS

    John Charles Brian FITZSIMONS, M.B.E., Assistant Chief Constable. (Former head of RUC Special Branch in Northern Ireland) He was killed on the 2nd June 1994 in the Mull of Kintyre Chinook crash.
    He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    HALLIDAY Alexander, Constable, collapsed and died while on guard duty in a police sanger on the 10th June 1987 aged 60.
    He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    Reserve Constable Stanley HARRIS Died 28 March 1988, aged 56
    Collapsed and died while on guard duty in a police station sanger.
    He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    MONTGOMERY Stuart John, Royal Ulster Constabulary, murdered by terrorists 7th September 1981 aged 18 years and 6 months. He was fatally injured on mobile patrol when a terrorist landmine exploded in County Tyrone.
    "Pass not this stone in sorrow but in pride and may you live as nobly as he died".
    He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    TOWNSEND Andrew Noel, Royal Ulster Constabulary died 19th January 1979 aged 24.
    He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    McROBERTS Thomas , 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Irish Rifles, killed in action in France 13th August 1917 aged 26. He was the son of Thomas and Jane of Castle Street, Comber. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland and he is at rest in the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.

    Canada
    McCULLOUGH David, Captain, 38th Battalion, Canadian Infantry who fell in action in France 10th August 1918. He was the son of James and Rachel of Poplar Gardens, Knock. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland and also on the Vimy Memorial, France

    CALVERT Hans, Signalman D/JX229549, Royal Navy of H.M.S. Tamar died at sea on the 2nd October 1942. He was the son of Thomas M and Sarah Jane of Comber, County Down, Northern Ireland. He is commemorated on his parents memorial in Comber Cemetery, and also on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.

    Canada
    JACKSON Hugh, Private 436733, C Company 49th Canadian Infantry, Alberta Regiment was killed in action near Ypres, Belgium 1st May 1916. He was born on the 24th October 1892 to Hugh and Maria nee Ringland of 83, Cheviot Avenue, Strandtown, Belfast, Ireland. In 1911 he was a Pupil Teacher and living with his parents and siblings at 83 Cheviot Avenue. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland and is at rest in New Irish Farm cemetery, Belgium.

    PROCTOR James who fell at Passchendaele in 1917. He was the son of John and Barbara of "Dalvourne" Comber and was the husband of Mary Jane Niblock. He was Sergeant 18594, 13th Royal Irish Rifles killed in action 16th August 1917 aged 34. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland and he is at rest in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.

    OLIVER Ellis, Private 16322, 6th Royal Irish Fusiliers killed in action at the Dardanelles on the 10th September 1915 aged 21. He was born at Ballyclare, County Antrim to Andrew Johnston and Mary of Castle Street, Comber, County Down. He is commemorated on his parents memorial in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland and also on the Helles Memorial, Turkey

    OLD SERVICE
    Captain James McMORRAN, J.P. Died 8th May 1968 age 79. The following information may belong to him.
    London Gazette, dated 24th January 1916.
    Princess Victoria's (Royal Irish Fusiliers) to be temporary 2nd Lieutenant on probation. 6th January 1916
    He was promoted to Lieutenant 6th June 1917.
    His medal card shows that he retired 12th September 1921 and he applied for his medals on the 27th August 1921. He was in France in 1916 with the 9th Royal Irish Fusiliers. He lived at 27, Balfour Street, Newtownards, County Down, Ireland. In 1911 he was living with his parents John and Roseanne and his siblings at 14, Balfour Street
    His son Captain Jack McMorran who died 15th September 1983 I have been unable to find any records in relation to his promotion to his rank or service in which he was serving.

    MORROW William James (Jim) Ex Royal Navy and Royal Ulster Constabulary died 21st March 2013 aged 83. He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    GIBSON George Ex Royal Air Force Pilot 1922 - 1999 He is at rest with his wife Evelyn in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    MARTIN Hazelette died 13th January 1997 aged 74. Ex, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He is at rest in Comber Cemetery, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    SKILLEN, James. Third Engineer Officer, Merchant Navy, on S.S. Glen Head (Belfast). Died on active service 1941 at sea aged 48.. He was the son of James and Margaret Jane of Ballymaconnell, County Down, Northern Ireland and he was the husband of Nannie Alberta Skillen of Belfast, Northern Ireland. . He is commemorated on a family memorial in Bangor Abbey St Comgall churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland and also on the Tower Hill Memorial, London

    GIBSON, John Malcomson, Lieutenant 126704, 5th Battery, 45th Light Anti Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery, killed in action at Tobruk on the 21st June 1942 aged 30. He was the son of James and Mary Ann of Newtownards, County Down. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Bangor Abbey St Comgall Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland and he is at rest in Knightsbridge War Cemetery Agroma , Libya.

    BARRETT, Ernest William. Captain, Flight Commander, 29th Squadron, Royal Flying Corps killed in action in the air above Ypres salient on the 29th May 1916 aged 26. He was the son of James Hunter and Eleanor Jane and brother of Ernest William who also fell. In 1901 he was living with his parents and siblings at 23, Church Road, Holywood, County Down. In 1911 his parents were now living at 44, Queen's Parade, Bangor County Down. The CWGC have his parents address as "Leysfield," Regent's Park Road, Church End, Finchley, London. His brother, Knox Gordon also fell. Wills and Admin, Ancestry.co.uk., have his home address as Seaview, Farnham Road, Bangor, County Down, Ireland and he was a Captain in the Royal Flying Corps and was killed in Belgium 29th May 1916. Great Britain, Royal Aero Club Certificates 1910-1950 have the following. He was born on the 16th February 1890 at Holywood, County Down. He was by profession and assistant manager of a rubber estate. His certificate was taken on a Maurice Farman Biplane at the Military School, Brooklands on the 7th August 1915. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Bangor Abbey St Comgall Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland and he is at rest in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium

    BARRETT, Knox Gordon. Lieutenant, 2/20th Trench Mortar Battery ,Royal Field Artillery killed in action 20th September 1917. He was formerly Gunner 141473, Royal Field Artillery, and he gained his commission on the 1st September 1916. He was the eldest son of James Hunter and Eleanor Jane and brother of Ernest William who also fell. In 1901 he was living with his parents and siblings at 23, Church Road, Holywood, County Down. In 1911 his parents were now living at 44, Queen's Parade, Bangor County Down, Ireland. He in 1911 was now living at 8. Milton Chambers, Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, South West London and he was by occupation a bank clerk. Wills and Admin, Ancestry.co.uk have his home address as Seaview, Farnham Road, Bangor, County Down. He was killed in action in France while on active service. His effects went to his father, James Hunter, Petty Sessions clerk for Holywood, Bangor and Newtownards all in the County of Down. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Bangor Abbey St Comgall Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland.


    BARRETT, Norman James. Sub Lieutenant, Royal Navy Reserve died 14th March 1915 aged 21, in the Chelsea Registration District. He was the son of James Hunter and Eleanor Jane and brother of Ernest William who also fell. In 1901 he was living with his parents and siblings at 23, Church Road, Holywood, County Down. In 1911 his parents were now living at 44, Queen's Parade, Bangor County Down, Ireland. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Bangor Abbey St Comgall Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland.
    Underneath his inscription reads the following. "When thou passest thru the waters, I will be with thee. Home is the sailor, home from the sea"

    FERGUSON, Robert. 2nd Canadian Contingent, killed in action 6th June 1916 aged 30. He was the son of Matthew and Annie. Private 412729, 18th Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action at Ypres. They have his next of kin as Matthew Ferguson of 20, ?? Gardens, Belfast. He enlisted on the 23rd February 1915 at Lindsay, Ontario and he gave his occupation as an iron worker He is at rest in Bedford House Cemetery, Belgium.

    FINLAY, Andrew Campbell. Private 29383, 1st Wellington Infantry Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force killed at Messines on the 8th June 1917 aged 31. He was the grandson of Andrew and Eliza and son of John. He is commemorated on his grandparents memorial in Bangor Abbey St Comgall Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland, and he is at rest in Wulverghem-Lindenhoek Road Military Cemetery, Belgium.

    NEILL, David William. Gunner 492, 73rd Siege Battery, South African Heavy Artillery killed in action near La Bassee, France on the 9th April 1918 aged 37. He was the son of David and Henrietta of Crawfordsburn, Belfast, Ireland, (now Northern Ireland). He is commemorated on a family memorial near the entrance to Bangor Abbey, St Comgall, County Down, Northern Ireland and he is at rest in Beuvry Communal Cemetery Extension, France


    Boer War
    MAGUIRE, Charles James Kinahan. Captain, 1st Royal Sussex Regiment. He was born 31st March 1872 at Bushmills, County Antrim, Ireland, and he was killed in action at Diamond Hill, Pretoria, South Africa on the 12th June 1900. He was the son of Edward and Mary nee Kinahan. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Bangor Abbey St Comgall Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland and he was inetrred by his brother officers near the spot where he fell.

    John William BOOTH, Engineer, Royal Navy who died at sea on the 9th august 1892 aged 29. This stone is erected by the Ward-Room Officers of H.M.S., Audacious as a token of esteem and respect for their late comrade. Wills and Admin, on Ancestry have the following. He lived at Beverley, Yorkshire and his effects went to Leaper Booth, gentleman. This memorial is at Bangor Abbey St Comgall Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland

    Peter LAVERY of Bangor County Down. Sergeant with the Royal South Down Militia. He was born at Magharlin in 1779, joined the Militia in 1797, discharged from the army aged 50 in 1829, and died 25th August 1845 aged 66. He was husband of Catherine and son-in-law to Eleanor McEvoy. He is at rest in He is at rest in Bangor Abbey St Comgall Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    Erected by Captain Findlyson Kenn in memory of Charles KENN, Royal Navy who perished at sea with all his crew by the foundering of his vessel in March 1835. He was the son of Elizabeth and brother of Captain, Findlyson Kenn of Aberdeen Scotland. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Bangor Abbey St Comgall Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    Master Mariners (Mariners) Memorials
    William HASSAN, Master Mariner lost from the ship, William Perry bound for Danzig in October 1847 aged 29. He is commemorated on a family memorial in

    Matthew FERGUSON, Master Mariner died 5th November 1932 aged 82. He was the husband of Elizabeth, and formerly of Annie who died in 1885 aged 28 and the was the father of Robert who fell the WW1 while serving with the Canadian Army.

    Captain, Alexander CAMPBELL, who died of Cholera at Quebec whilst serving on ship "Independence" on the 5th September 1849 aged 37. He was the husband of Jane and the son-in-law to William and Isabella FINLAY. It may have been Naval Ship, USS Independence.

    Captain James FINLAY. Who died the 4th Apr 1852 aged 40. He was the husband of Ann Jane McWha, and was the son of William & Isabella. Bangor He is at rest in Bangor Abbey St Comgall Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    Captain, David William NEILL of Bangor who died 15th November 1832 aged 61. He is at rest in Bangor Abbey St Comgall Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    Captain , Arthur Hill COATES, died 19th September 1922 aged 80, and he was the husband of Mary Frances. He is at rest in Bangor Abbey St Comgall Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    John Edward SIMPSON, Ships surgeon of the Titanic , lost at sea on the 25th April 1912 aged 37. He was the son of John, Medical Doctor and Elizabeth, née Crickard of 76 Pakenham Place Belfast, Ireland (now Northern Ireland) He is commemorated on a family memorial.

    Cloughey Presbyterian Churchyard, County Down.



    ATKIN, Edward. Corporal 233149, No 1, Operative Section, Inland Water Transport, Royal Engineers . He drowned at sea on the 10th May 1917 He was crewing HMS P.T.1 , sank near the Isle of Man, in the Irish Sea. He was born in Liverpool, England and enlisted at Vancouver British Columbia. He is at rest in Cloughey Presbyterian Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland.
    The cause of the sinking of P.T.1.
    P.T. 1 left Glasgow on May 9th, 1917. The next morning, when off the Isle of Man, the weather became bad, a moderate gale springing up from the south-east. The vessel commenced to labour heavily and to fill up forward. The pumps were started, but the water gained on them, and at 9.30 p.m. the boats were ordered away. The star- board boat, with the chief officer and eight men on board, got safely away ; but before the port boat could get clear, a heavy sea washed her under the sponson, throwing the occupants into the water. Five of these were picked up by
    the other boat, which came to their assistance immediately, the remaining seven being drowned. (In fact six drowned and one survived but injured.

    The names of the other five crew that lost their lives are as follows.
    STEELE, John Edmund. Acting Sergeant 202339, No.1 Operative Sect. Inland Water Transport, Royal Engineers, drowned at sea on the 10th May 1917 aged 19. He was the son of John Henry and Annie Grace Steel, of 84, Thoresby St., Prince's Avenue, Hull. He is at rest in Hull Western Cemetery, Hull, Yorkshire. Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up at Chatham on the 18th September 1916 aged 19 and 5 months and he was by occupation a seaman. On the 10th May 1917 he was transferred to No1 Operative Section, Inland Water Transport, Royal Engineers, serving on P.T.1. After the sinking of the P.T.1 his body was washed ashore at Stranraer, Scotland.

    SWANGER, Thomas Slade. Lance Corporal 157563, No.1 Operative Sect. Inland Water Transport, Royal Engineers, drowned at sea on the 10th May 1917. He was born in 1878 and baptised at Holy Trinity St Philip, Bristol on the 22nd November 1878, his parents were john and Sarah Ann who in 1901 were living at 35, Barton Hill, Lower Road, Bristol and he was the husband of Thurza nee Pocock who he married on the 21st July 1901 at Bristol, St Clement. He is at rest in Movilla Cemetery, Newtownards, County Down, Northern Ireland.

    GREEN, John Henry. Sapper 272050, No.1 Operative Sect. Inland Water Transport, Royal Engineers and he drowned in the Irish Sea on the 10th May 1917 aged 24. He was crewing HMS P.T.1 , when it sank near the Isle of Man, in the Irish Sea. He was the son of David John Green, of 26, Friar's Street, St. Ebbe, Oxford.. For some unknown reason he is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq, although he was drowned in the Irish Sea.

    YOUNG, Charles. Sapper 26525, No.1 Operative Sect. Inland Water Transport, Royal Engineers, formerly Private 595, Royal Field Artillery. He was born and enlisted at Grimsby, Lincolnshire. He drowned in the Irish Sea on the 10th May 1917 while serving on P.T.1 when she foundered and sank near the Isle of Man. For some unknown reason he is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq, although he was drowned in the Irish Sea.

    CHATTERISS, Alfred Charles Brahame. Sapper 205761, No 1, Operative Section, Inland Water Transport, Royal Engineers . He was part of crew on P.T.1 which foundered and sank near the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea. He was rescued by steam trawl boat Summervill from Fleetwood and was taken to Peel on the Isle of Man. He taken to Spanish Head Hospital, Isle of Man, but he died the same day the ship sank, 10th May 1917aged 37 from exposure. Their was no inquest and a death certificate was issued stating the cause of death as exposure. He was the son of Alfred Charles and Elizabeth Chatteriss, of Lowestoft and he was the husband of Martha Florence Louisa Chatteriss, of Silver Street, Besthorpe, Attleborough, Norfolk. He was laid to rest with full military honours in Holy Trinity Churchyard, Kirk Patrick, Isle of Man on Sunday the 13th May 1917.

    He enlisted on the 11th December 1915 and was posted to the Army Reserve. On the 21st August 1916 he was mobilised and the next he was posted to the Royal Engineers Depot, Chatham. Prior to enlistment he was employed as a coal porter and he lived with his wife and family at Silver Street, Besthorpe. He was married at the Registry Office, Mutford, Suffolk as Alfred Charles Brahame Chatteriss to Martha Florence Louisa George. They had the following children all born at Lowestoft. Florence Ann Amelia born 1st January 1909, Gladys Elizabeth born 16th December 1910, Alfred Charles born 23rd July 1913 and twins Benjamin William and Walter Arthur born 28th August 1915 they died and the deaths were registered in the fist quarter 1916 Jan-March.

    TEASDALE, John. Sapper 200978 No.1 Operative Section. Inland Water Transport, Royal Engineers was injured but survived He was rescued from the sea and taken to the Isle of Man where he was admitted into Spanish Head Hospital

    McVEA, Robert. Rifleman 249, 2nd Royal Irish Rifles, killed on active service 24th March 1917 (CWGC have 1918) aged 19 and was the son of David and Sarah. He is commemorated on his parents memorial in Cloughey Presbyterian Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland and also on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.

    McVEA, Alexander Magowan. Flight Sergeant, Pilot 590584, 216 Squadron Royal Air Force died on active service on the 14th April 1941 aged 25. He was the grandson of David and Agnes Isabella and son of David and Sarah of Portavogie, County Down, Northern Ireland. (On this memorial. He is interred in Lagos, West Africa). He is commemorated on his grandparents memorial in Cloughey Presbyterian Churchyard, County Down and he is at rest in Ikoyl No2, Nigeria.

    BELL, Hugh. Chief Officer, Merchant Navy (Master Mariner) on S.S. Cheldale (Newcastle-on-Tyne) lost at sea on the 17th February 1940 aged 40. He was the son of William and Rachel and he is commemorated on his parents memorial in Cloughey Presbyterian Churchyard, County Down Northern Ireland and also on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
    The ship sank after it was in collision with Greystoke Castle, 20.8 miles of Durban, South Africa. It sank in minutes with the loss 16 crew.

    James A BELL, Captain, M.B.E. died 30th May 1972 He is at rest in Cloughey Presbyterian Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland.
    He was awarded the MBE for his part in locating and rescue of survivors from the Larne-Stranraer Ferry, Princes Victoria which sank of the Copeland Island in a severe storm on the 31st July 1953 with the loss of 133 lives.

    William BELL, Merchant Navy died 31st January 1999. He was the son of Captain James A Bell M.B.E. He is at rest in Cloughey Presbyterian Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland.
