1st Earl Wavell, Archibald Percival Wavell Biography (1883–1950) India British field marshal, born in Colchester, Essex, S England, UK. He studied at Winchester College and Sandhurst Military Academy, served in South Africa and India, became Allenby's chief-of-staff in Palestine, and in 1939 was given the Middle East command. He defeated the Italians in N Africa, but failed against Rommel, and in 1941 was transferred to[COLOR=red ! important][FONT=Verdana,sans-serif][COLOR=red ! important][/FONT][/COLOR][/COLOR] where he became viceroy, and was made field marshal and viscount (1943). He was later created an earl (1947), and held the posts of Constable of the Tower (1948) and Lord-Lieutenant of London (1949).
