    Eastern Front
In the Southern sector the battle on the river Bug begins, and the Soviet defence line is broken. But although, they were everywhere in retreat, the Russians were by no means finished: they have some excellant tanks in the field including the giantic 55 ton Klim. Voroshilov. The German generals ask Hitler in vain for bigger tanks and anti tank guns more powerful than the 37mm and 50mm guns they now have available to them. There are still only very few 75mm guns.
    Winston Churchill
Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt meet at Argentina in Placentia Bay (Newfoundland). Accompanied by the Chief of the Imperial General Staff, Sir John Dill, and the First Sea Lord, Sir Dudley Pound, has arrived in the brand new battleship Prince of Wales. Roosevelt, with his advisers has come in the Crusier Augusta. Next day, after a religious service on board Prince of Wales, sees the openeing of the Atlantic conference in which the principles of the Atlantic Charter are enuniciated, defining the war aims of the demoracies. Churchill presses the President strongly to bring America into the war, and he recieves a guarentee of US intervention in the event of a Japanese attack on Malaya, Singapore and the Dutch East Indies. The two statesman also agree on the reply to the Japanese proposals: They ask for Neutralization of Thailand and French Indo-China, and at the same time Tokyo is given a firm warning. Any further Japanese expansion would lead to a situation in which the goverment of the United States would see itself obliged to take counter-measures, even if it led to war. The statesmen have no illusions about Japanese intentions, however. The conference goes on until 12th August.
