I have this young man from Gorton .... he is listed as being included on Panel at Brookwood but he died of TB after discharge ... I can't find a grave and I was told that CWGC had already amended their records ... could somebody please point me in the right direction of where to look now ! Thanking you in advance Annie RAMSDALE, THOMAS Private Royal Marine Light Infantry Late of 2nd R.M. Bn. R.N. Div. 28/12/1916 PLY/832(S) PANEL. BROOKWOOD (UNITED KINGDOM 1914-1918) MEMORIAL Son of Thomas & Maria Ramsdale, 7 Shepherd St., West Gorton Died from TB 28/12/16 after Discharge (Invalided, TB, 21/10/16).
I don't understand what you mean here, Annie. Won't he be on the memorial at Brookwood because of the fact that he doesn't have a known grave (and therefore you've already "found" him)?
My thought was .... if he was discharged and came home and died .... he has to have a grave / or ashes spread somewhere ... don't you think ?? Annie
I don't know if I'm barking up the wrong tree here, but if you are referring to the fact that he died after discharge and therefore should have a grave in (maybe) his local cemetery or something - it's not always the case as many graves went unmarked or became lost. Maybe he was cremated? If any of my own family had been in his shoes, then they'd have had no grave either (a family thing - but we don't particularly "go for" commemoration in this way (no-one in my family from my Gt,Grandparents down to my mother and my sister have a grave as such!). Might seem a little odd to some, but we're certainly not alone in our beliefs!
I'm just quicker on the draw !!!!!!!!! I've checked Southern in Manchester and I want to check Moston ( if he was Catholic ! ) ...... but theres nothing on line !! Annie
Could be a recent new commemoration (seems odd no panel number given) so the burial could be long lost/forgotten. Try searching t'other place to see if he was recently commemorated. I believe there have been quite a few RMLI/RND added in recent years.
Oooh lookee here ! ........ !! but it's the same information I've got !!!!!!!!! PLY/832/S Pte. Thomas Ramsdale, RMLI Late of the 2nd Royal Marine Battalion, R.N. Division. Died from TB 28/12/16 after Discharge (Invalided, TB, 21/10/16). Son of Thomas & Maria, 7 Shepherd St., West Gorton, Manchester. http://www.cwgc.co.uk/AmendRec.htm
There's only one panel (as such) on it Geoff (well, 2 if you include the addenda panel )! . It's a tiny memorial compared with others.l
I think he's here !! ... at Gorton Cemetery !! A possible burial at Gorton Cemetery on the 3rd January, 1917. 03/01/1917 Thomas Ramsdale Gorton Cemetery 446 www.burialrecords.manchester.gov.uk/ Unfortunately it looks as though this was a common grave - but it does tie in with his date of death on the 28th December 1916 Annie
And heres a possible death ..... Thomas Ramsdale aged 34 Prestwich December Quarter 1916 Volume 8d Page 413 Thinking that he may have died in a hospital - so not in the same registration district as where he was living 1901 census in Gorton has him aged 17 which ties in with his age at death ! What do you think ?
Looks like you've found him. Might be worth letting CWGC know so they can check. Don't think a headstone can be put on a common grave, but at least their on line record can be added to. geoff
If you let CWGC know, they'll probably run their own checks. Terry Denham may be able to get things moving a little quicker if you ask him.
