Gareth Verge, Arthur (‘Jack’) played for Australia Internationals: 2 : 1904 BT- BT- Arthur Verge was born in 1882, in Kempsey, the son of Austral and Matilda Jane Verge. Played as a Fullback for: Sydney University, NSW, Blackheath Profession: Medicine Remarks: Played for Blackheath 1907-1908. Brother of Captain Cuthbert Arnold Verge, AAMC, who also played for Sydney University War service: Captain, Australian Army Medical Corps, attached to 6th Light Horse, Australian Imperial Force; he joined the Army on 10 July 1915 and departed Sydney on board HMAT A29 Suevic on 21 December 1914. After landing at Gallipoli he remained on the Peninsula until he was evacuated due to severe illness. He died of disease on 8 September 1915, in Egypt, and is buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt [Grave Q. 523].

Died of other causes (dysentery) at 17th General Hospital, Alexandria, Egypt, on 8 September 1915, aged 35. Grave: Chatby Military cemetery.
Annie It's all part of a plot to confuse later researchers - similar to the way someone is often positioned in front of the serial number in aircraft photographs. In some books he's Arthur, and in others Cuthbert Arhur. The best that I can work out is that Cuthbert and Arthur were brothers, and that Arthur played for Australia. To add to the confusion, he's not mentioned in the authoritative Australian Rugby - the Game and the Players. Gareth
