RAF Marham's tribute to a war-time hero - Lynn News

THE outgoing Station Commander at RAF Marham has honoured the memory of a wartime hero by naming a barrack block after him.
In his final act as station commander, Air Commodore Phillip Osborn has named the refurbished block after Leonard Cheshire.

Leonard Cheshire was the youngest Group Captain in the Second World War and for a time commanded the famous 617 Dambusters Squadron.

He flew 101 missions and was noted for his bravery and his commitment to his men, receiving three distinguished service orders, a Distinguished Flying Cross, a Victoria Cross, and the Order of Merit.

After the war he went on to found Leonard Cheshire Disability, a charity which works to change attitudes to disability and to help disabled people in 55 countries, including over 21,000 in the UK.

Air Commodore Osborn said he had drawn inspiration from Leonard Cheshire's life and that he hoped by naming the block after the hero it would inspire modern airmen and women to aspire to his values.

Leonard Cheshire Disability Trustee George Miall said he was delighted by the decision to honour their founder in this way, with the charity celebrating its 60th anniversary alongside the RAF's 90th this year. Air Commodore Osborn will be succeeded by Group Captain Colin Basnett as station commander. Gp Cpt Basnett hoped the decision to name the block after Leonard Cheshire would strengthen the relationship between RAF Marham and the charity in the future.

If Cheshire was around today, I am sure he would be proud of that gesture.

Er? Um? RAF Turnhouse had a Cheshire Block, as well as a Thompson Block and Cruickshank Block!

At RAF SWinderby, I was in 12 flight and we were billited in Cheshire Block, which stood next door to Gibson block!
