    Wartime Memories

I can remember as a schoolchild during the war, staying with my mother's aunt in Ashington in Northumberland, having been sent there by my mother, who felt it would be safer for me than London, this little memory.
We had all been playing in the school yard when above us a dog-fight was in full swing.
The Spitfire this time was shot down and crashed to earth about half way to Newbiggin on the coast.
Immediately after school we decended on the area scavenging for momentoes.
It took the police many days to recover all the unexploded cannon shells we had made off with from the broken wings which were the only things visible, the body of the aircraft disappearing into the soft soil.

On returning a couple of years back, I saw that the area of the crash had now been built on.

    Cheers
    Keith
