Casualties at the unveilling of Ashton-under-Lyne War Memorial

    Ashton-under-lyne (Lancashire) WW1 memorial was unveilled in 1922. Thirty eight bronze panels contain 1,512 names of local men who gave their life for King & Country. A crowd of around 20,00 people gathered to watch General Sir Ian Hamilton unveil the memorial on September 16 1922, but disaster struck when a viewing platform collapsed injuring 40 people, some seriously.
