    This is one of a series of posts to mark the international Rugby players who served in, and survived, The Great War. If anyone has further information on the men concerned, I’d be most grateful if it could be added to the thread.

    Bolton, Charles Arthur CBE played for England

    Internationals: 1: 1909 F+

    Charles Bolton was born on 3 January 1882

    Played as a Flanker for: Marlborough College, Oxford University, United Services Portsmouth, Barbarians, Surrey

    Profession: The Army.

    War service: Lieutenant Colonel, Manchester Regiment; Mentioned in Despatches 3 times. CBE 1919

    Remarks: Played for Barbarians: v Cardiff (3-6) in 1908; v Swansea (5-19) v Cheltenham (9-3) in 1909. Played for the Officers of the Army v the Officers of the Royal Navy in 1909 (0-25) and 1910 (10-19). He joined the Royal Tank Corps in 1923. Brigadier 1931. Served during the 1939-1945 War in the British Expeditionary Force to France in 1939, and then in the Middle East in 1940; Mentioned in Despatches twice. Order of the Nile and Order of the Redeemer (Greece) 3rd class.
