    This is one of a series of posts to mark the international Rugby players who served in, and survived, The Great War. If anyone has further information on the men concerned, I’d be most grateful if it could be added to the thread.

    Brown, Charles played for New Zealand

    Internationals: 2: 1913 A+ (1t) A-

    Charles Brown was born on 19 December 1887 in New Plymouth

    Played as a Scrum half for: Central School New Plymouth, Star, Taranaki, Tukapa, North Island, Combined Services

    Profession: ?

    War service: Lance Corporal, Field Engineers, NZ Division, NZEF

    Remarks: Charles Brown first played for Taranaki in 1909 and captained the team when they defeated Auckland in the Ranfurly Shield in 1914. In 1913 he played as a guest in the Maori XV. During the War he played in the NZ Divisional team which won the Somme Cup in France in 1917. After playing the 1919 King’s Cup tournament, he Captained the 1919 NZ Army team in South Africa. NZ tour of Australia in 1920. He played 11 games for the All Blacks, including his 2 Internationals. A leading administrator and club coach as well as selector. His brother Claude played in a New Zealand selection trial match in 1935. He played eleven times for the All Blacks, including two Internationals.

    He died on 2 April 1966 in New Plymouth.
