Not sure about his service in WW1 .... though he was at the Royal Naval College ! Charles Edward Lucas Hammond. Born 3rd October 1879. At the School from September 1897 to July 1898. Died on 15th April 1963. “Mr Charles Edward Lucas Hammond was a well known schoolmaster and a noted rugby footballer, being an old Oxford ‘blue’ and an English international forward. Born at Pontefract on 3rd October 1879 and educated at Newton College, Newton Abbot and Bedford School, he went up to Hertford College, Oxford as an Exhibitioner in 1898, taking his BA degree in 1902. Captain of his college XV, he played against Cambridge at the Queen’s Club in 1899 and 1900 and captained the Harlequins and Middlesex between 1902 and 1906. His first game for England was against the New Zealand touring side, ‘The All Blacks’ in 1905 and altogether he won eight caps for England. He was elected a member of the Barbarian Football Club. A keen oarsman in his younger days, he was in the Bedford School VIII and also in his college crew. After being an assistant master at Stanmore Park Preparatory School and at Wellington College, he was a master at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth from 1908 to 1940 and at Felsted from 1940 to 1943”.
