City to remember Battle of Britain - Northumberland Today

One of the most important events of the Second World War is to be remembered at a special commemoration service in Newcastle followed by a parade across the city.
The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Newcastle will represent the city at the service to mark the Battle of Britain on Sunday at 12 noon at St Thomas the Martyr Church.

The service will also celebrate the formation of the Royal Air Force which marks its 90th anniversary this year.

A parade of serving men and women from RAF Boulmer and cadets of the Air Training Corp will take place on St Mary's Place directly after the service.

The parade will start at the St George's TA centre on Sandyford Road and take in St Mary's Place, Percy Street before continuing along Blackett Street where it will pass the City War Memorial at Old Eldon Square.

It will be the largest Battle of Britain Parade in the North East and will also feature the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment.

There will also be a fly past from the Battle of Britain Memorial flight including a Douglas DC-3 Dakota.

Lord Mayor David Wood, said: "I am proud to represent the people of Newcastle at this service of thanksgiving which remembers the role of service men and women whose efforts during the Battle of Britain helped change the direction of World War Two."
