I haven't looked through all of these but I wonder if they are a little too inclusive. I randomly clicked on the casualties for those who died in the USA; there were five who all died in different air crashes, but as these crashes would not have been as a result of enemy action, I wonder why the CWGC counted them? Do deaths in India from illness count as deaths in action?

Possibly requires further research, however if they were seconded and working in war services this could be part of the criteria.

Civilian War Dead executed on Tarawa 15/10/1942

There were 5 British subjects beheaded on Tarawa along with 17 Australian & New Zealand Coastwatchers in retaliation by the Japanese for the American bombing of the island.

I found this quite interesting as I have been on Betio at Tarawa many times and knew civilians had been killed however I never knew their names.

    Adrian,

Anyone who was working for the war effort officially and died during that time is recognised by the CWGC. Doesn't matter if they died in an accident or from sickness they would be on the CWGC database and classed as war dead. Same goes for civilians who died because of enemy action, ie a bombing raid.
Hope that helps with your question.

One great thing I have found is that you can look through a particular date in a particular area or country then check to see what occurred on that day.

"If you wish to go that far of course"
