    This is one of a series of posts to mark the international Rugby players who served in, and survived, The Great War. If anyone has further information on the men concerned, I’d be most grateful if it could be added to the thread.

    Gilray, Colin MacDonald MC OBE played for New Zealand and Scotland

    New Zealand Internationals: 1: 1905 A +

    Scotland Internationals: 4 : 1908 E+ ; 1909 W- E+(1t) ; 1912 I-

    Colin Gilray was born on 17 March 1885 at Broughty Ferry, Scotland

    Played as a Wing/Centre for: Otago Boys’ High School, University, South Island, Oxford University (Blue 1908-1909), London Scottish

    Profession: Lawyer/college principal

    War service: Second Lieutenant, A/Captain, Rifle Brigade. MC Gazetted on 2 August 1917. He commanded an Officer Cadet Unit from 13 September 1918.

    Remarks: Rhodes scholar. His International v Australia was his only match for the All Blacks. Played for Oxford University (3-19) v the 1908-1909 Wallabies. Principal of John McGlashan College 1922-1934; Headmaster of Scotch College in Melbourne, 1934-1953, and deputy chancellor of the University of Melbourne.

    He died on 15 July 1974 in Melbourne
