Dambusters memorial is 'defaced'

A memorial to the Dambusters squadron has been pelted with flour and eggs in a vandalism attack in the days leading up to Remembrance Sunday.

Residents in Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire say they are "disgusted" by vandals who defaced the memorial to 617 Squadron.

Some villagers want to have extra lighting and CCTV installed to deter further attacks.

Stuart Adams, community beat officer, said the attack on the war memorial was "a despicable act".

Dams bombed

He said that obscene images were also drawn on the village cricket pitch with white paint.

The memorial was also the target of vandals who tipped rubbish bins over it at the weekend.

Parish council chairwoman Audrey Pestell said: "I was very unhappy when I saw the damage - it is a memorial to the young men and women who sacrificed their lives."

She said better lighting will be installed and some shrubs will be cut down to open up the Royal Square.

The Dambusters squadron was formed with the aim of breaching dams in the Ruhr area of Germany that provided vital power to key German industrial centres.

The daring operation on the night of 16 May 1943 successfully targeted the Moehne and Eder dams but two other attacks on the Sorpe and Schwelme failed.

Eight aircraft and 53 crew were lost during the night raid.

It was a easy out of the way place that would mean there were no witnesses and so they could not be caught.

However it is sad reflection on our times when people would feel proud to carry out such actions.

My thoughts on what to with them could not be printed!

Woodhall landmark to be spruced up - Horncastle News

AN important Woodhall Spa landmark is having a facelift.
Royal Square Gardens, off Station Road in the village, will hopefully be revamped and tidied up under plans by Woodhall Spa Parish Council and East Lindsey District Council.

The gardens are the location for the prestigious Dambusters Memorial and are on the site of the former Royal Hydro Hotel and Winter Gardens – destroyed by a bomb in 1943.

Woodhall Spa Parish Councillor Daphne Robinson has been pushing the revamp forward.

"This is a huge tourist attraction with the war memorial being here but it is looking a bit tired and some of the plants and trees need replacing," she said.

The parish council has put £250 into the pot and some shrubs were planted a couple of weeks ago as a starting point with the help of volunteers.

Coun Robinson said: "With the recession at the moment I wanted to show that we are prepared to put in the hard work.

"I feel strongly that if you help yourself then people will help you.

"We are looking at a three year programme to brighten it up and are hoping to add new trees at some point. It needs to be authentic and fit in with the village."

She is hoping ELDC will take on the bigger jobs such as replacing the damaged wall around the memorial.
