The sad story of how a Dunkirk veteran lost the final fight of his life reached us today from the pages of one of our sister newspapers, the Hull Daily Mail. They have been covering the two-year battle by relatives of elderly residents of Rokeby House to keep it open in the face of council closure plans following severe flood-damage two years ago. Leading from the front was 95-year-old Harry Glentworth who fought with the British Expeditionary Force and escaped from the beaches of Dunkirk. The determined pensioner even recorded an impassioned plea weeks ago on video which called on councillors to keep the care home open. But when the council confirmed its decision two weeks ago, relatives said Mr Glentworth seemed to lose heart and he died in hospital on Saturday morning. Lasting Tribute blog Dunkirk veteran Harry Glentworth, 95, has been buried with full military honours in west Hull. Mr Glentworth was at the heart of a campaign to save Rokeby House care home, run by Hull City Council, from closure.
