    This is one of a series of posts to mark the international Rugby players who served in, and survived, The Great War. If anyone has further information on the men concerned, I’d be most grateful if it could be added to the thread.

    Ernest Gardiner was born on 6 October 1886 (perhaps in Wales)

    Played as a Hooker for: Devonport Services, Royal Navy, Devon

    Profession: Royal Marines

    War service: Royal Marine Light Infantry

    Remarks: Some sources credit his try v Scotland in 1921 to R Edwards.

    He died on 26 January 1954

    The two basic references are The Book of International Rugby Records, which has 'Gardner' and The Complete Who's Who of International Rugby, which has 'Gardiner'. The Centenary history of the RFC has 'Gardner' so I'll change my records to go with the majority.
