A little known fact I thought you might like to know .....

The American Air Service gave us the expression to "conk-out" ...... "conk" being the last sound of a disengaging aircraft engine.

Many sources indicate that the term 'ace' for a pilot who was credited with five victories was coined by the French in 1915, when after S/Lt Adolphe Pégoud (the first pilot to complete a loop) of MS25 brought down his fifth victim in April of that year and was described as an as.

Pégoud went on to be credited with another victory when flying with MS49 before he was shot down in combat on 31 August 1915. Ironically, the German who was credited with bringing him down was Uffz Kandulski, a former pupil of Pégoud's.
