Relevant to this thread and the one of Major-General Throsby Bridges: One of the myths of WW1 is that the Generals hid in their chateaus away from any danger, sending the soldiers to their deaths. This is just not true. Certainly in the British Army, the proportion of Brigadier-Generals killed was as high as the number of privates. Nine British Major-Generals were killed, three of them at Loos alone. In WW2, only two British Major-Generals were killed.
