Hi all, Good to see quite a few familiar names here, feel at home already. I research No.120 Squadron RAF Coastal Command from June 1941 when they were reformed to the last day of WW2, and also the aircraft they operated with - the B-24 Liberator. Hence my user name, 120 Squadron are these days known as CXX Squadron. I also have an interest in the U-boat war in general. Hope to some of you around. Regards Peter
I'm sure I remember you from a different forum; I remember the 120 Sqdn connection. I think you used a different name then! Welcome back!
Welcome across Peter. Good to see that Latin is still alive and well. 120sq is one of those, where there were a very small number (3) of Aussie deaths. (by my info) One on 25/10/1942 Alan Henry Wood, Torquay Cemetery in (Devon- No Photo as yet) & Two on 4/10/1943 E.A. Mincham & W. Stott on the Runnymede Memorial. View attachment 1607
Good to see you here Peter. Always good to have such a knowledgeable person on the forum. Hope you enjoy it here
Hi spidge. Thanks for the welcome If memory serves me right Wood was killed in an air raid on a hospital in Torquay. Mincham and Stott were killed while providing air escort to convoy ON204 when Liberator FL923 V/120 was shot down by U 539. The squadrons OC was killed in the same incident.
His service file doesn't indicate exactly how he died (his casualty file hasn't been digitsed) but does state that he was seriously ill for the preceeding few months. And History of Torquay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Incidentally, CXX are celebrating their 90th birthday this year, with all ex-members invited along. Roxy
Many thanks to all for the welcome. Thanks Roxy, I did know of the CXX reunion. I attended the first one the squadron held in 1985 and the last in 2003, not that I was on the squadron (My father was killed on 120 in 1942), I started researching CXX many years ago now and over a period of time had a lot of contact with the squadron historical officers, they have a fantastic record of their wartime exploits and it is usually displayed at the event. At the 1985 reunion I was billeted in the officers mess, at the 2003 reunion I was billeted in the sergeants mess - I got demoted. Regards Peter
