Funeral of World War II heroine A funeral has been held in Torun of General Elzbieta Zawacka, one of two female generals in the Polish Army, a legendary World War II heroine. She passed away a week ago, two months before her one hundredth birthday. As a courier between the Home Army, the underground Polish Army in Nazi occupied Poland, and the Polish government-in-exile in London, she was parachuted into Poland to organize resistance movement in the country. She fought in the 1944 Warsaw Rising. She held the highest Polish military and state distinctions, including the Order of the White Eagle and the Virtuti Militari. The funeral ceremonies were attended by representatives of the Polish President and Prime Minister, as well as of the British Embassy.
