When you were young did you ever play with toy soldiers or tin soldiers? Did you ever watch The Nutcracker ballet? Want to escape back to a time of innocence, if only for a short time? Have I got a treat for you:

a film from 1934 Russia (Soviet Union). Lieutenant Kije. It is a comedy of errors which mocks the Tsar and his court. Through a series of errors an "officer of the Guard" is created out of the air (being easier than telling the truth to the Tsar), and the lie takes on a life of its own.

The film is mostly forgotten in the West except for the Lieutenant Kije Suite (music from the film) by Sergie Prokofiev (Peter and the Wolf).

Enjoy my gift for the season.
