Saw something on UKTv History that made a fleeting mention of the German Navy's bombardment of Hartlepool in 1914, so I thought I'd look it up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raid_on_Scarborough,_Hartlepool_and_Whitby http://www.gwpda.org/naval/kzsdec14.htm Something I'd never heard of myself but the attack resulted in 137 fatalities and 592 casualties, many of which were civilians.
It's surprising to know how many people died from bombs during WW1 ..... apart from ships there were the Zeppelin and Gotha attacks also .... at one point "all Londoners at least had every reason to believe they were on the front line ... " But its upsetting to know that "the powers that be " knew about it and did nothing ....... http://www.firstworldwar.com/battles/scarborough.htm
