Maidenhead Advertiser Online - Nazi broadcaster's WW2 microphone sold for £8k at auction

A private collector snapped-up the microphone of Nazi broadcaster Lord Haw Haw for £8,000 when it went to auction in Marlow yesterday.

The amount paid by the mystery buyer was double the estimate auctioneer Steven Bosley had put on the Second World War artefact, which belonged to the infamous fascist, real name William Joyce.

Mr Bosley, of Bosley's Military Auctioneers and Valuers, said he was both surprised and delighted: "Honestly, we didn't know how much it would go for because it is something which you can't quantify."

"It was the most significant item in the sale - it is such an emotive item and it typifies broadcasting during the Second World War."

The microphone was found by soldier Cyril Millwood, who discovered it when his unit stormed a radio station in Hamburg where Joyce broadcast his Germany Calling programme.

The papers and microphone were kept by in Millwood in his loft in Ware, Herts, and were only discovered after his death.

Joyce, who left the UK to broadcast Nazi propaganda during the Second World War, was later caught by British soldiers and hanged for high treason.
